In high-pressure, high-temperature piping systems, the integrity of every connection is paramount. A failure at a single flange can lead to catastrophic consequences, including dangerous leaks, costly downtime, and significant safety hazards. This is where the precision engineering of Ring Joint Gaskets becomes non-negotiable. Unlike conventional gaskets, ring joint gaskets are designed to create a robust, pressure-energized metal-to-metal seal, making them the definitive solution for the most demanding services in oil & gas, petrochemical, refinery, and offshore applications. As a leader in advanced sealing technology, Kaxite Seals manufactures a comprehensive range of RJ gaskets that meet and exceed the most stringent international standards, ensuring leak-free performance where it matters most.
A Ring Joint Gasket is a solid, one-piece ring machined from metal, designed to fit into a specially machined groove (the ring groove) in matching flanges. When the flanges are bolted together, the gasket is compressed, causing the soft metal to flow into the fine imperfections of the flange grooves, creating an exceptional seal. The sealing action is primarily radial, with system pressure further enhancing the seal's tightness. This design is ideal for:
Kaxite Seals produces RJ gaskets in both oval and octagonal cross-sections, in various sizes and materials, to provide the perfect match for your specific operating conditions and flange specifications.
Our manufacturing process adheres to precise dimensional tolerances and material specifications to guarantee optimal performance and interchangeability. Below are the detailed parameters of our standard product line.
Kaxite RJ Gaskets conform to ASME B16.20, API 6A, and other relevant standards. Key dimensions include Ring Number, Pitch Diameter, Width, and Height.
| Ring Number (R / RX / BX) | Nominal Pipe Size (NPS) | Pitch Diameter (P) - Inches | Width (W) - Inches | Height (H) - Inches |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| R11 | 1/2 | 1.344 | 0.188 | 0.219 |
| R23 | 2 | 3.125 | 0.250 | 0.344 |
| R37 | 6 | 7.625 | 0.375 | 0.500 |
| R60 | 12 | 15.125 | 0.500 | 0.656 |
| R77 | 20 | 22.625 | 0.625 | 0.812 |

Selecting the correct gasket material is critical for corrosion resistance, temperature capability, and sealability. Kaxite Seals offers a wide selection.
The maximum working pressure of a ring joint connection depends on the flange class, gasket material, and temperature. Kaxite Seals gaskets are rated for full flange class pressure when used with correctly machined flanges.
| Flange Class (ASME B16.5) | Max Working Pressure @ 100°F (Psi) | Typical Temperature Range (Soft Iron/SS) |
|---|---|---|
| Class 900 | 2,160 psi | -20°F to 850°F / Up to 1500°F |
| Class 1500 | 3,600 psi | -20°F to 850°F / Up to 1500°F |
| Class 2500 | 6,000 psi | -20°F to 850°F / Up to 1500°F |
The primary difference is in their cross-sectional shape. Oval ring gaskets have a rounded, oval shape and require higher bolt load to achieve initial seal. Octagonal ring gaskets have a flat-top, octagonal shape. They provide a larger sealing surface area, require lower bolt load for initial seating, and often offer better sealing performance, making them a preferred choice in modern installations. Both types fit into the same ASME B16.20 ring groove. It is crucial never to mix oval rings with octagonal grooves or vice-versa.
It is generally not recommended to reuse a Ring Joint Gasket. During initial bolt-up, the metal flows and deforms to conform perfectly to the flange groove. Once disassembled, the gasket has been "work-hardened" and its geometry is altered. Reusing it will likely result in an imperfect seal and potential leakage. For critical service reliability, Kaxite Seals always advises using a new, certified gasket for every assembly.
Material selection depends on three main factors: the chemical composition of the process fluid (corrosivity), the operating temperature, and the required pressure rating. First, consult the piping specification or equipment data sheet. If unavailable, consider the fluid's pH, presence of chlorides, sulfides, or acids. For high temperatures, consider thermal expansion and strength retention. Common choices like 316 Stainless Steel serve many applications, but for harsh environments like sour gas (H2S), specific grades like Inconel 625 may be mandatory. Kaxite Seals' technical team can provide material selection guidance based on your detailed service conditions.
These designate different ring joint styles for varying pressure classes and applications. R Rings are standard rings for ASME B16.5 flanges (Classes 900 to 2500). RX Rings are pressure-energized rings designed for higher pressure and are interchangeable with R rings of the same number but provide a more effective seal under higher pressures. BX Rings are designed for API 6A wellhead and tree equipment (e.g., 10,000 psi, 15,000 psi, 20,000 psi). They have a different geometry and are NOT interchangeable with R or RX rings. Using the correct type specified for the flange is critical for safety.
Leaks can occur due to several reasons: Incorrect gasket material selection leading to corrosion or crushing; using an oval ring in an octagonal groove (or vice-versa); damage to the sealing surfaces of the gasket or flange grooves (nicks, scratches, galling); improper bolt tightening procedure (uneven torque leading to uneven compression); insufficient bolt load; reusing a previously used gasket; or misalignment of the flanges during assembly. Regular inspection of flange grooves and using high-quality gaskets from a trusted manufacturer like Kaxite Seals are key to preventing leaks.
Ring Joint Gaskets are precision components. Store them in a clean, dry environment to prevent rust or contamination. Keep them in their original protective packaging until ready for use. Always handle with clean gloves to prevent oils from skin causing corrosion on certain materials. Never drop or impact the gasket, as this can create dents or flats on the sealing surfaces that will compromise the seal. Inspect both the new gasket and the flange grooves visually before installation.
